Dealing with a historic building can be quite a challenge, given the fact that its renovation is not as simple as for any other type of building. There is a set of rules and regulations that need to be complied with in order to be able to make changes to a historic building.
Even if some of the historic windows have proven that they can pass the test of time by being successfully maintained and repaired, not all buildings are that lucky. There are Georgian buildings with windows that require special attention and care, thus special advice is also required. Depending on the windows condition, you may need either a craftsman, an architect or a structural engineer. Or even advice from specialists in timber and glass. Then, there are the cases when nothing can be done for them, so the windows need to be replaced. But this is not the only reason for which one may want to change them. Old windows are losing energy because they are not properly insulated.
However, historic windows should first be repaired and refurbished before consider replacing them. Then, if replacement is the best option, keep in mind that modern-style windows are not appropriate for a historic building. Also PVCu affects the aspect of this type of houses, so it is not suitable for their appearance. What’s more, the original design of the historic windows must be identically reproduced in order to preserve the Georgian air.
